Max Slevogt was born in Landshut in 1868 and died in 1932 in his estate in Neukastel, near Leinsweiler. He studied at the Munich Academy with Wilhelm von Diez and began with a dark painting, nourished by realism and old masters. His first historical and mythological subjects, including Danaé, already showed a taste for flesh, contrast and staging.
