Maxfield Parrish was born in Philadelphia in 1870 and died in Plainfield, New Hampshire, in 1966. Son of the painter and engraver Stephen Parrish, he traveled young to Europe, studied at Haverford College then at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, before briefly following the teaching of the illustrator Howard Pyle. In the 1890s, posters, magazine covers and illustrated books quickly established his talent. He worked for Scribner's, Collier's, Harper's Weekly, Life and Ladies' Home Journal, while producing advertisements and wall decorations. Installed in 1898 at The Oaks, his Cornish house-workshop, he often built the columns, vases and accessories for his own compositions, which he photographs under carefully tuned lighting. His technique is based on precise drawing and multiple transparent glazes which give the colors an enameled depth. The famous Parrish blue, associated with gold, purple and luminous skin tones, transforms mountains, terraces and skies into almost supernatural settings.
