1849 -1927 · Bornholm, Copenhagen and Skagen colony
Michael Peter Ancher was born in 1849 in Rutsker, on the Danish island of Bornholm, and died in Skagen in 1927. After his first experience in commerce, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In 1874, he went to Skagen for the first time with his friend Karl Madsen. This village located at the northern end of Jutland soon attracted a community of Scandinavian painters eager to work on the motif, at a distance from academicism. This village located at the northern end of Jutland soon attracted a community of Scandinavian painters eager to work on the motif, at a distance from academicism. Ancher met Anna Brøndum, daughter of the owners of the local inn, whom he married in 1880. Established permanently in Skagen, Michael and Anna became the center of a network bringing together PS Krøyer, Laurits Tuxen, Christian Krohg and many artists. Michael Ancher is dedicated to fishermen, rescuers, village families and the dangers of the sea. His large compositions give men a heroic stature without erasing the reality of work. In more intimate works, the head of an old man, a young girl or a woman of a knitting fisherman reveals the same attention to marked faces and daily gestures. The beach and the northern sky provide a clear, sometimes cold light, which simplifies volumes. View of a beach shows this direct relationship to the horizon and the atmosphere. Co-founder of the Skagen Museum in 1908, Ancher helps preserve the colony's heritage. Anchers Hus, where he lived with Anna and their daughter Helga, they still retain their workshops and their family world. The "Michael Peter Ancher" selection notably compares View of a Beach and The Head of an Old Man. His reading favors color.
Michael Ancher looks at the people of Skagen without picturesqueness: under the northern light, every face and every gesture gains the strength of a collective story.
