The Grenoble Museum combines a large old collection with one of the first public collections of modern art established in France.
The Grenoble Museum was created on February 16, 1798 following a citizen petition intended to safeguard works seized during the Revolution. Louis-Joseph Jay, its first curator, constituted a public collection for education of artists and residents. After the Bishop's Palace, the museum moved in 1876 into a building shared with the library on Place de Verdun. Its trajectory changed profoundly under Andry-Farcy, curator from 1919 to 1949. He opened the rooms to living artists and directly solicited Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Bonnard, Léger and major collectors, making Grenoble the first modern art museum in France. Since 1994, a new building presents more than nine hundred works, from ancient Egypt to contemporary creation. The paintings selected summarize several strengths of the journey. Ingres concentrates the linear sensuality of his Great Odalisque in a leading study. Monet observe the Seine at Argenteuil then the Giverny pond. Matisse finally makes an eggplant interior a total surface where patterns, furniture and colors abolish the traditional perspective.
