Agen · Founded in 1876 · Fine arts, archaeology and decorative arts
The first Agen collection was formed during the Revolution around confiscated property and the scientific collections of the Society of Sciences, Belles Lettres and Arts. After several projects, the municipal museum was officially founded in 1876 and opened to the public in 1880. It was installed in four private mansions from the Renaissance and the 17th century, gathered in the heart of the city. Donations, legacies, acquisitions and deposits shape an encyclopedic museum combining archaeology, fine arts, furniture, decorative arts and natural history. More than three thousand objects are traditionally presented in its rooms. The Spanish collections, enriched by the Count of Chaudordy, give Goya a major place; the landscape of 19th century is represented by Corot, Sisley, Boudin and Monet. The chosen works confront the individual, the rite and leisure: Goya paints himself lucidly, observes a relief ceremony and imagines the flight of a balloon, while Monet transforms the cliff of Fécamp into a mass of light facing the sea. The "Museum of Fine Arts of Agen" selection notably compares Self-portrait - Francisco de Goya and Falaise de Fécamp - Claude Monet. His reading favors drawing.
In Agen, 19th century encyclopedism remains visible: fine arts, archeology and objects of civilization together tell the story of tastes and knowledge.
