Frankfurt · Founded in 1815 · Seven centuries of European art
The Frankfurt merchant and banker Johann Friedrich Städel established an institute in 1815 by will bringing together a public museum and an art school. This civic foundation, the oldest in Germany, first developed from his house and its approximately five hundred paintings. In 1878, the museum moved into the building built on the banks of the Main, gradually enlarged and rebuilt after the war. The underground wing dedicated to contemporary art, opened in 2012, doubles the spaces of this section under a garden punctuated with circular glass roofs. The collection covers seven centuries with approximately one hundred and ten thousand works: ancient masters, modern painting, contemporary art, sculpture, photography and a graphic collection of more than one hundred thousand sheets. Rembrandt, Vermeer and Degas embody baroque drama, scientific thought and the modernity of spectacle here. The "Städel Museum" selection notably compares Samson’s Blindness - Rembrandt and The Geographer - Johannes Vermeer. His reading favors space.
The Städel remains faithful to the project of its founder: a private collection transformed into civic property, continually enriched to tell the story of seven centuries of art.
