The Unterlinden Museum opened on April 3, 1853 in the former Dominican convent of Unterlinden, saved after the Revolution and entrusted to the Schongauer Society. Local archaeological collections and religious works seized in the Haut-Rhin form its first core. The Isenheim Altarpiece, painted by Grünewald and sculpted by Nicolas de Haguenau between 1512 and 1516, gave the museum international fame. The route gradually extends to decorative arts, to ancient painting, impressionism and 20th century art. The extension designed by Herzog & de Meuron, completed in 2015, connects the convent to the old bathhouse with an underground gallery and a new wing. Renoir, Monet, Bonnard and Delaunay show here how portraiture, landscape and still life lead from impressionism to modern color. The "Unterlinden Museum" selection notably compares Portrait of Joseph the Heart - Pierre-Auguste Renoir and The Creuse Valley, setting sun - Monet. His reading favors light.
In Unterlinden, the medieval cloister and contemporary architecture organize a journey of several millennia around the Isenheim Altarpiece.
