1656 -1746 · Paris, Antwerp, London and French portrait
Nicolas de Largillière was born in Paris in 1656 and died there in 1746. Raised in Antwerp, he received Flemish training attentive to color, materials and facial observation. Around 1674, he moved to London and worked for several years with Peter Lely, the court's first painter. Back in France, he was admitted to the Royal Academy in 1686, an institution he would later direct. His clientele belonged less exclusively to the court than to the world of magistrates, financiers, writers, ecclesiastics and professionals. Largillière gave everyone an image of success: velvet, satin, fur, pearl, curtain and landscape were painted brilliantly, but the look retained a presence individualized. His self-portraits affirm the intellectual and social rank of the painter. The Portrait of Ami Lullin adapts this magnificence to a Geneva theologian; that of the Duchess of Maine unites dynastic power and theatricality. The Allegory of Louis XV's engagement to the Infanta of Spain extends portrait resources to political representation. The National Gallery recalls his Antwerp apprenticeship, his time with Lely and his specialization in the portrait of professional classes. The "Nicolas de Largillière" selection notably compares Self-portrait and Ami Lullin. His reading favors drawing.
Largillière paints status through material, but resemblance through light: the fabric dazzles, while the face holds the gaze for a long time.
