Nikolai Astrup was born in Bremanger in 1880 and died in Førde in 1928. After his artistic training, he returned in 1902 to Jølster, in western Norway, where he became a small farmer, painter and engraver. His work remains closely linked to this territory of mountains, lakes, gardens and long clear nights. Astrup, however, does not observe the rural community from the inside: son of a pastor, he takes a close and slightly offbeat look at peasant customs. In Midsummer Eve Bonfire, developed in several painted and engraved versions, the great Midsummer Eve Bonfire brings together dance, seduction and beliefs linked to the forces of nature. Foxgloves transforms them tall flowers of the garden in colorful rhythm in front of the dark mass of the landscape. Rhubarb demonstrates the same attention to cultivated plants and domestic fertility. Astrup often uses a motif in painting then in color wood engraving, modifying season, light and details.
