Sharp portraits, experimental typography and liberated color make Olga Rozanova a dazzling figure in the Russian avant-garde.

Olga Rozanova was born in Melenki in 1886 and died in Moscow in 1918, at just thirty-two years old. Trained in Kazan then in workshops in Moscow, she joined the Youth Union in Saint Petersburg and quickly participated in the most radical debates of the Russian avant-garde. Her first portraits broke down the face in angular planes, surrounded the bright color shapes and brought together cubism, futurism and popular tradition. The Self-Portrait asserts a frontal and independent presence; the portraits of Anna Vladimirovna Rozanova and other models show how she transformed the resemblance through the rhythm of the outline and chromatic tension. Rozanova also works with the poet Alexei Kroutchenykh: she illustrates and designs books where letters, transrational words and images become a unique composition.
