1828 -1886 · Paris, Rome and great academic setting
Paul Baudry was born in La Roche-sur-Yon in 1828 and died in Paris in 1886. A student of Michel-Martin Drolling at the School of Fine Arts, he won the Prix de Rome in 1850 and stayed for several years at the Villa Medici. The study of Raphael, Michelangelo and especially Venetian color nourished an academic painting that was more flexible and sensual than severe. Baudry began at the Salon in 1852, quickly received public commissions and became a sought-after portraitist in the society of the Second Empire and then the Third Republic. His major project was the setting of the foyer of the Paris Opera, to which he devoted nearly ten years: mythology, music and poetry were displayed there in a clear order adapted to the architecture of Charles Garnier. The portraits collected in this collection show the other side of his art. Ernest Hoschedé appears with the confidence of the collector and man of the world. Madame Louis Cézard combines fabric, complexion and posture in an elegant effigy. Plato Tchikhatchov and the Portrait of a Man favor psychological presence without renouncing academic finish. Baudry thus combines the decorative grandeur and individual attention of the portrait. The "Paul Baudry" selection notably compares Portrait of Ernest Hoschedé and Portrait of a Man. His reading favors atmosphere.
Baudry gives the grand style the flexibility of the portrait: the line orders, the fabric animates and the look makes each model present.
