Peder Severin Krøyer was born in Stavanger in 1851, grew up in Copenhagen and died in Skagen in 1909. Admitted at thirteen to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he revealed exceptional virtuosity very early on. Travels to Europe and a stay in Léon Bonnat's Parisian studio brought him closer to French naturalism, outdoor painting and a rigorous study of luminous values. When he arrived in Skagen in 1882, he was already recognized.
