Philip Wilson Steer was born in Birkenhead in 1860 and died in London in 1942. Son of a portrait painter, he trained in Gloucester then in London, before studying in Paris at the Académie Julian and the École des beaux-arts. There he discovered impressionism, Whistler and modern research on light. Back in England, he joined the New English Art Club, founded in 1886 to offer an alternative to the conservatism of the Royal Academy.
