1729 -1802 · Toulon, Rome, Naples and Vesuvius
Pierre-Jacques Volaire was born in Toulon in 1729 and died in Naples in 1802. Coming from a family linked to arsenal arts, he worked in Joseph Vernet's entourage and participated in the culture of the Mediterranean navies and landscapes. He settled in Rome in 1764 then in Naples, where Vesuvius became the center of his work. The volcano was then at the same time a natural phenomenon, a sublime spectacle and attraction of the Grand Tour. The excavations of Pompeii, begun in 1748, further reinforced the European fascination for a mountain capable of uniting destroyed Antiquity and contemporary catastrophe. In Eruption of Vesuvius, dated 1771 and painted on the site, red lava descended towards the bay while the human silhouettes underline the overwhelming scale of the phenomenon. The Eruption of Vesuvius, seen from above, offers another construction: distance and point of view dominate the territory, but incandescence maintains dramatic tension. Volaire systematically opposes fire and night, red and blue, movement of lava and stability of the sea.
