Shen Zhou was born in 1427 into a wealthy family in Suzhou and died in 1509. Unlike many men of his rank, he did not pursue an official career and devoted his life to study, poetry, calligraphy, painting and friendly relations. He systematically examines the great masters of the Yuan, notably Huang Gongwang, Wu Zhen, Ni Zan and Wang Meng, without trying to slavishly copy them. He transforms their idioms into a personal language, sometimes broad and energetic, sometimes dry and stripped down. This approach establishes what we will call the Wu school, linked to the literate culture of Suzhou. Poet on the top of a mountain condenses his art into a few elements: a mass rocky, a pine tree, a small figure and a vast void. Man is not the master of the mountain; it becomes the point from which the landscape can be contemplated, written and mentally inhabited.
