1851 -1915 · Tatras, Polish realism and Zakopane style
Stanisław Witkiewicz was born in 1851 in present-day Lithuania and died in Lovran in 1915. Trained in Saint Petersburg then in Munich, he established himself in Warsaw as a painter, illustrator and critic committed against academic conventions. He defends an art based on observation, the truth of the motif and openness to European transformations. From his first stay in Zakopane in 1886, the Tatras became a central subject. Halny represents the hot and violent wind that descends from the mountains: clouds, ridges and vegetation no longer form a simple panorama, but an organism crossed by an invisible force. Witkiewicz also seeks the basics in the architecture and ornament of Podhale in a modern national style. He designs villas, furniture and decorations according to this "Zakopane style", not as a picturesque copy, but as a living system capable of renewing Polish creation. An influential writer and theorist, he combines painting, criticism and architecture in the same cultural project.
