Telemaco Signorini was born in Florence in 1835 and died there in 1901. Son of the painter Giovanni Signorini, he received his first family training then attended the Florentine Academy without locking himself in. At Caffè Michelangiolo, he participated in the debates which gave birth to the Macchiaioli, a group determined to renew painting through direct observation and relationships of light and dark spots.
