1769 -1830 · London, Regency and European diplomatic portrait
Thomas Lawrence was born in Bristol in 1769 and died in London in 1830. A child prodigy, he drew pastel clients of the inn run by his father in Devizes and contributed very early to family income. Installed in Bath then in London in 1787, he exhibited at the Royal Academy and quickly conquered high society. The portrait of Elizabeth Farren, actress promised to the title of Countess of Derby, presented in 1790, transformed a walk into a lively apparition: dress, wind, gaze and landscape built a new elegance. After Reynolds' death, Lawrence became an ordinary painter to George III in 1792. His portraits combine resemblance, idealization, supple drawing and brilliant color, but the workshop had to manage numerous unfinished orders and a difficult financial situation. Ennobled in 1815, he received a decisive mission from the prince regent: to travel across Europe to paint sovereigns, diplomats and generals allied against Napoleon. These effigies intended for the Waterloo Chamber in Windsor give a collective image of the new European order. Antonio Canova appears as an inspired creator, George IV as a sumptuous monarch, while John Julius Angerstein combines intelligence, commerce and collection. Elected president of the Royal Academy in Windsor, Lawrence became the central figure of the British artistic world. Elected president of the Royal Academy in 1820, Lawrence became the central figure of the British artistic world. His quick touch, his reds, his deep blacks and his animated Looks renew the great tradition of Van Dyck and Reynolds in the Age of Regency. The "Thomas Lawrence" selection notably compares Mademoiselle Elizabeth Farren and Antonio Canova. His reading favors composition.
Lawrence paints power in motion: a hand, a look and a burst of color are enough to transform rank into presence.
