Thomas William Roberts was born in Dorchester, England in 1856 and died in Kallista, Victoria, in 1931. His family emigrated to Melbourne in 1869. A photographer by training and a student at the National Gallery Schools, Roberts continued his apprenticeship at the Royal Academy in London between 1881 and 1885. His European stay introduced him to outdoor painting, impressionism and a clearer palette. Back in Australia, he worked with Frederick McCubbin, Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder in Box Hill, Mentone then Heidelberg; their quick little studies and their 1889 exhibition helped define Australian impressionism. Roberts, however, did not limit his ambition at the bright moment. The Mowing of the Rams, painted between 1888 and 1890 from sketches made at Brocklesby station, gives the work of the shearers the scale of a history painting. Installed in a corner of the hangar, the artist observes the curved bodies, the reflected heat, the dust and the collective rhythm.
