Venice, 1518 - around 1570 · Desire, music and mythological poetry
Venus occupies a central place in Titian's work because it links mythology, desire, color and poetry. The Offering to Venus, painted in 1518 for the camerino of Alphonse d'Este, populates a garden with a multitude of loves inspired by Philostratus: Antiquity becomes a sensual and fertile celebration. In 1554, Venus and Adonis are sent to Prince Philip in the cycle of "poems". The goddess, shown from behind, holds back the hunter who is heading towards death; Titian demonstrates that painting can compete with sculpture by offering several points of view of the body. Versions of Venus with an organist or lute player move the myth to a contemporary villa. The musician plays while looking at nudity, while Venus turns to a dog or Cupid: sight, hearing, harmony, marriage and eroticism intersect depending on the version. The painter creates five variations on this theme, intended for different clients. Other images show the goddess in the mirror or blindfolding Cupid. Each time, Titian preserves silhouettes and transforms attributes, looks and relationships to produce new meaning. The selection "Venus by Titian" notably compares Venus and Adonis and Venus with an organist and Cupid. His reading favors drawing.
Titian never repeats Venus identically: he moves a look, a love or an instrument, and the whole story of desire changes.
