Valencia, 1501 -1551 · From the Gothic altarpiece to the Renaissance
Vicente Masip, also written by Macip, was born in Valencia in 1473 and died there in 1551. He was documented as an independent master and altarpiece painter in 1501. His first manner extends the Valencian traditions of the 15th century, but his language evolves through contact with the innovations of the Italian Renaissance disseminated in Spain. For a long time, part of his work was confused with that of his son Joan de Joanes; recent research has given the father a major role in the Valencian artistic transition. The first compares the embrace of Mary and Elizabeth with that of their husbands. The second shows Agnes after the failure of the pyre, clutching her lamb while the executioner prepares to behead her and the angels bring palm and crown.
