Fruits remain still, but all color circulates around them
The large bouquet of purple grapes connects the two halves of the composition. Red apples occupy the lower edge, while yellow and green fruits balance the upper part.
The tablecloth is not a neutral background: its blue, purple and white lines revolve around the fruits. The shadows take on their complement and reinforce the sensation of vibration.
Painted in Paris in the fall of 1887, this 46.5 × 55.2 cm oil on canvas is F382/JH1337. It is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago under number 1949.215.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh simplifies his objects, thickens the material and organizes the whole thing into pairs of complementary colors. The yellows face the purples, the blues the oranges, and the reds the greens.

The purple cluster forms the central axis
Its tight grains and dark contours give weight to still life, then draw the eye towards the lighter green clusters.

The fruits are shaped by bold colors
Apples, lemons and pears are not melted by smooth gradients: their volumes are born from short touches of red, yellow, green and blue.

The sheet becomes a force field
The pulsing pattern of brush strokes describes curves around the fruit and transforms the table into an active surface rather than a simple support.

A possible "violent still life"
The painting may have appeared in the exhibition of young artists organized by Van Gogh in a Parisian restaurant in November-December 1887.

Given to the museum by Kate L. Brewster, the work is now on view in Gallery 241 of the Art Institute of Chicago.
The copy must preserve the individual shape of the grains, the central purple mass, the colored reflections of the apples, the complementary contrasts and the circular movement of the tablecloth.
