A vault of branches without decorative design
The red and brown branches change thickness and sometimes disappear under the flowers. They must remain irregular to build the volume of the trees without forming a fixed pattern.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · around 1899 -1900 · Giverny · W1621
Apple trees laden with white and pink flowers cover almost the entire sky. Their red-brown trunks frame an alley that extends from the lower right towards a light area in the center. On the ground, touches of red, blue and yellow transform the Giverny garden into a colorful carpet without erasing its depth.

Look at the work
The large trunk on the right forms the main anchor. It rises diagonally, divides into red branches and joins those of the trees on the left above the path. The flowers are painted in small touches of white, pink and pale blue which allow fragments of green and turquoise sky to circulate.
The pink path starts in the lower right corner then narrows towards the center. On each side, the flowerbeds mix bright green, red, purple, yellow and white. Monet varies the size and direction of the keys to distinguish the dense foreground from the more diffused light at the bottom of the garden.
The perspective of the path gives firm depth to an area almost entirely covered with flowers, leaves and branches.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

The red and brown branches change thickness and sometimes disappear under the flowers. They must remain irregular to build the volume of the trees without forming a fixed pattern.
The path widens sharply downward and cools as it moves away. Its design must remain legible under the colorful covers of the garden.
White, pink, blue, red and yellow are distributed in short touches. Reproducing each flower as an isolated shape would cause the general vibration of the orchard to lose.

Documented benchmarks
These markers bring together concordant information from the catalog raisonné and the photograph documented at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
The work is dated around 1899 -1900 and measures 90 × 92 cm. The open documentation identifies it as an oil on canvas kept at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and links it to number 1621 of Monet's catalog raisonné.
Based in Giverny since 1883, Monet gradually organized the plantings around his house. In this canvas, the garden is not a simple botanical decoration: the path, the growth of the trees and the masses of flowers become the elements of a very constructed composition.
The high-definition source was photographed at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and made available by Anagoria on Wikimedia Commons. It allows you to observe the key, colors and almost square format with much more precision than the old 2000 px file.
