Six meters wide, the Giverny basin becomes a space without banks or horizons. Two panels respond to each other with turquoise blues, deep greens, vertical reflections and small pink flowers which seem to float above a moving material.

A two by six meter diptych that replaces the landscape with the experience of water

The composition is deployed on two canvases of 200 × 300 cm. The left panel concentrates darker reflections and light water lilies; the right panel opens turquoise and blue-gray passages. The central junction remains visible without interrupting the continuity of the pool.

Monet superimposes directions: long descents of reflected trees, horizontal gestures of the surface, circular touches of leaves and pink punctuations of flowers. Without a horizon to stabilize the gaze, these rhythms alternately give the impression of depth and proximity.

On this scale, Water Lilies are no longer a window open to the garden: they form an environment where the eye moves as if in front of the water itself.

Vertical reflections suggest space beneath the surface, while leaves and flowers constantly bring the eye to the fore. This back and forth constitutes the heart of the work.

A monumental material kept irregular

Dense areas alternate with more open passages. Standardizing the thickness or repeating the water lilies in a decorative pattern would make the large format lose its breath.
