The workshop boat appears at the bottom, on the left, like a small light cabin placed on the water. A slender tree and a bank covered with foliage, on the contrary, occupy the entire right half. Monet therefore not only paints his work tool: he places it in luminous vegetation whose yellows, greens and mauves are reflected in the Seine.

Look at the work

The floating workshop becomes a pattern among reflections

The boat is thrown back into the upper left corner and occupies only a small part of the canvas. Its white cabin, bordered in blue, houses a seated silhouette. The Seine creates a horizontal passage in front of it which disappears behind the advanced bank.

On the right, a dark trunk rises to the upper edge and shares the golden foliage. The branches and grasses in the foreground are painted in quick touches, sometimes very light. Their purple and green reflections connect the bank to the boat.

The workshop boat is not isolated like an object portrait: its small architecture blends into the network of branches, water and light.

A very assertive asymmetry

The small, light cabin balances a much larger, more colorful shoreline. This difference in size makes the framing lively and gives the impression of a view captured from the water.

The trunk placed near the center right separates the distant foliage from the grass in the foreground. It stabilizes a surface where the keys constantly change direction.

Complementary yellows and mauves

Warm foliage meets lilac and purple-blue shadows. Their opposition illuminates the scene without requiring large flat white areas.

Its white immediately catches the eye; enlarging it or placing it in the center would change the balance of the composition.

The foliage is painted in colored layers

Yellows, greens, pinks and purples overlap without general outline. The gaps of sky and water must remain visible.

Water changes color depending on the area

It turns purple near the boat, blue towards the bottom and green under the bank. These transitions are more important than a perfectly symmetrical reflection.

The Yvan Amez-Droz legacy

The painting joined the Neuchâtel collections in 1979 with the legacy of Yvan Amez-Droz. Its AP number 1658 allows this version to be precisely identified.
