Monet's workshop boat rests between two stakes on an almost motionless Seine. Its dark hull, light cabin and low roof are reflected among the greens, blues and browns of the water. A barely visible figure stands in the cabin, probably Monet himself. Most of the canvas is nevertheless devoted to the river and the calm light of a summer day.

The floating workshop becomes a stable form amidst reflections

The boat is placed slightly above the center and follows a long horizontal. Two thin stakes, one on the left and the other near the stern, indicate that it is moored. The cabin has blue-gray walls, a dark opening and a beige roof; a small silhouette merges with the interior shadow.

The opposite bank forms a strip of soft trees in the upper part. Under the boat, the reflections lengthen into vertical touches then break horizontally on the surface. The foreground remains wide open and transforms the river into the main space rather than a simple support for the subject.

Monet paints the tool that allows him to paint: the boat-workshop is at the same time motif, mobile point of view and manifest of work before nature.

The boat occupies only a narrow strip while the river fills almost two-thirds of the image. This proportion gives reflections and color changes equal importance to that of the object represented.

The hull, cabin and roof are distinguished by their values, but their edges mingle in places with the bank and reflections. This continuity keeps the workshop in its bright environment.

Docking verticals, boat horizontal

The two stakes visually fix the boat and interrupt the great horizontal calm. Their prolonged reflections create a discreet rhythm all the way to the bottom of the canvas.

A few dark and light touches are enough to suggest a presence. Specifying it as a portrait would make you lose the silence and distance desired in this view.

The reflections do not exactly duplicate the boat

They lengthen, shift and mingle with the greens of the shore. This transformation must remain irregular to make the water alive despite its calm.

The hull combines brown, blue and green

It appears dark but receives the colors of the sky and the trees. Avoiding uniform black helps maintain its volume and its relationship with the river.

Painting from the middle of the Seine

Monet had a cabin large enough to accommodate his easel and equipment. He can thus choose viewpoints inaccessible from the bank and follow the effects of light directly on the water.

In the wake of Charles-François Daubigny

The museum recalls that Monet adopted this system following the landscaper Daubigny, who was already using a floating workshop. He adapted it to the landscapes of Argenteuil where he lived from 1871 to 1878.

A voluntary summer immobility

The boat is shown moored between two piles and not moving. The figure probably identifiable to Monet remains in the cabin; the absence of action brings to the fore the calm reflections, the sky and the shore.
