From a high balcony at 35 boulevard des Capucines, Monet watches the crowd, cabs and bare trees mingle in the winter light. Two men in top hats, brutally cut by the right edge, also observe the street. Painted in 1873, this horizontal version transforms the hustle and bustle of modern Paris into a vibration of small touches.
Look at the work
The clear facade on the left and the row of trees guide the eye towards the end of the boulevard. In the center, vehicles and passers-by are decreasing rapidly. The balcony parapet closes the lower right, while the two truncated spectators bring the painter's space closer to that of the visitor.
The silhouettes are only vertical lines of black, blue and brown punctuated with small lights. The beige roadway receives cold shadows; blue and purple branches cut out the pale sky. The city remains recognizable without anecdotal detail.
From a distance, a few marks become a crowd; up close, they remain autonomous brushstrokes, as fast as the circulation they evoke.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The heavy dive compresses passers-by and opens a long escape towards the crossroads. The men cut to the right point point out that the scene is observed from a real space, not from an ideal point of view.
Monet varies the size, spacing and tilt of small dark keys. These differences are enough to suggest the directions and speed of passers-by.
The facade, trees and roadway dissolve in beige, blue and mauve light. Urban volumes are never separated from the air that envelops them.

Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1873, this oil on canvas measures 61 × 80 cm. It is kept at the Pushkin Museum under inventory 4-3397 and listed as Wildenstein 292.
Monet works from the floors of photographer Nadar. It was at this same address that the first impressionist exhibition opened in April 1874.
Faure bought the painting from Monet through Édouard Manet in September 1874. Ivan Morozov acquired it from Durand-Ruel in 1907 before its nationalization in 1918.
This issue and inventory 0-3397 distinguish the horizontal canvas of Moscow from another vertical view of the boulevard now kept at the Nelson-Atkins Museum.
