An asymmetry that opens up the landscape
The architectural pattern remains in the lower left quarter. This decentering releases a vast surface of water and gives the eye the sensation of extending beyond the canvas.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · Varengeville-sur-Mer · 1882 · W737
A small cabin with warm walls and a red roof clings to the edge of the cliff of Varengeville-sur-Mer. Around it, the pale green sea and the silver sky occupy almost the entire canvas, bathed in afternoon light. Painted in 1882, this 54.5 × 80 cm oil on canvas belongs to the Musée d'Orsay and is deposited at the Musée national des Douanes de Bordeaux under the number RF 1985 14; it corresponds to Wildenstein 737.

Look at the work
The building is concentrated in the lower left corner, surrounded by grass and rock walls. Its oblique roof, its two chimneys and its light facade form a compact whole. To the right and above, no other construction interrupts the marine space.
Pink, orange, yellow and green give warmth to the cabin and the cliff. The sea mixes blue, sea green, white and pale yellow with long horizontal and curved touches. The bluish gray sky extends this range with a deliberately very soft contrast.
By reducing the cabin to a colorful presence at the edge of the frame, Monet measures the luminous immensity of the sea and the vulnerability of the construction exposed on the cliff.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The architectural pattern remains in the lower left quarter. This decentering releases a vast surface of water and gives the eye the sensation of extending beyond the canvas.
The walls and roof are constructed by dense, angular touches, while the sea develops into softer horizontal rhythms. The difference distinguishes the solid from the mobile.
The faint contrasts between sky and sea unify the upper part. The very pale greens and bluish grays let the oranges of the cabin become the bright focus.
Reference image
Only one exact image of W737 is used throughout the file. The real WebP measures 3,000 × 2,117 px, since reduced a museum photograph of 3,070 × 2,166 px without artificial enlargement.
It must not invade the composition. Its relationship with the immense marine surface constitutes the central principle of this W737 version.
These compact shapes make the building instantly recognizable and concentrate the warm colors in the left corner.
Water is not uniform blue. Its milky shades reflect the diffused afternoon light and connect it to the overcast sky.
Documented benchmarks
The Musée d'Orsay documents La Cabane des customs officers. Afternoon effect, oil on canvas from 1882, 54.5 × 80 cm, inventory RF 1985 14 and Wildenstein 737, deposited at the National Customs Museum of Bordeaux.
The notice from the Musée d'Orsay precisely identifies the site represented. Monet returned several times to this small construction during his 1882 campaign.
The signature is in the vegetation zone, under the cabin. It accompanies the oblique movement of the cliff without interrupting the maritime opening.
The work received the number RF 1985 14, was attributed to the Louvre Museum then to the Jeu de Paume, before being deposited at the National Customs Museum in Bordeaux.
