Claude Monet · A flowery meadow around Argenteuil · Museum of Fine Arts Boston
Meadow with poplars W378hand painted reproduction
A meadow strewn with flowers occupies almost the entire canvas. On the left, a large poplar tree rises to the sky and forms an imposing vertical mass; two thinner trees respond to it in the center, while a small figure advances among the grass. Monet constructs this landscape with light, thick touches in the foreground, then lightens his painting towards the horizon in order to circulate the air between the field, the trees and the clouds.

Look at the work
Three poplars give vertical architecture to the shifting expanse of the meadow
The large tree on the left is slightly cut by the upper edge and deliberately decenters the composition. Its dark green foliage contrasts with the light blue sky, but its trunk blends into the tall grass. Further on, two slender poplars stand out in front of a strip of vegetation and measure the depth of the field.
Touches of red, yellow, white and blue dot the meadow without drawing each flower. A small silhouette wearing a hat appears near the lower edge; its size makes the scale of the landscape noticeable. The clouds, treated with greater fluidity, prolong the movement of the grass without weighing down the sky.
The apparent simplicity of the pattern rests on a precise balance between the mass of the large tree, the opening of the sky and the colorful swarming of the field.
Composition, touch and light
What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
01
An asymmetrical but solidly balanced composition
The poplar on the left concentrates the main visual weight. Monet counterbalances it with the two trees in the center, the dark band of the horizon and the vast blue opening on the right; no rigid central axis is necessary to stabilize the scene.
02
The depth obtained by the way of painting
In the foreground, the colors are placed in short, contrasting impastos. They become colder, thinner and closer towards the bottom. This difference in touch creates the distance even before the shapes are precisely identified.
03
A first reflection on future motives
The museum notice highlights the early presence of poplars and millstones in this landscape. Monet will take them up later in series, but they are already instruments here for observing light, scale and seasonal changes.
Reference image
Read this specific version
The visual corresponds to inventory 23.505 of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and Wildenstein number 378. The reference image of 2397 × 1999 px was encoded as a real WebP at its native definition, without artificial enlargement.
Composition01
The large poplar remains irregular and alive
Its outline alternates between advances, hollows and transparencies. Transforming it into a compact silhouette would make the gaps in the sky and the vibration of the foliage disappear.
Color02
The meadow combines warm colors and cold shadows
Reds, ochres and yellows are among bluish greens and purples. This alternation gives light to the field without producing a uniform decorative carpet.
Matter03
The sky is more fluid than the foreground
The blues and whites are linked to it by flexible passages, while the herbs retain a discontinuous material. Preserving this contrast in style is essential to the feeling of space.
Documented benchmarks
Three pieces of information specific to this work
Painted around 1875, this oil on canvas measures 54.6 × 65.4 cm. It is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston under inventory 23,505 and listed as Wildenstein 378.
Location01
A campaign observed during the Argenteuil years
In the first half of the 1870s, Monet explored the fields and banks around Argenteuil. The canvas combines a tiny human presence with ordinary patterns - herbs, flowers and poplars - observed directly in the open air.
Painting02
Additional impasto in the foreground
The MFA notice notes the thick, bright touches of the field, where complementary colors reinforce each other. In the background, colder, smoother paint helps create air and distance.
Collection03
A legacy in memory of Clara Bertram Kimball
The work entered the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 1923 by the bequest of David P. Kimball, in memory of his wife Clara Bertram Kimball. Its inventory number 23.505 allows this version to be precisely identified.

What the painter must preserve
Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.
Preserve the asymmetry created by the large poplar.
Differentiate between the dense matter of the field and the fluidity of the sky.
Keep the small figure at its discreet scale.
Roll back the two central poplars in colder tones.
This horizontal composition is suitable for a bright living room, bedroom or work space. A light oak, deep green or matte gold frame accompanies the foliage; a cream or gray blue wall brings out the little flowery notes.
