Charing-Cross Bridge in London, Tokyo W1525hand painted reproduction

Charing Cross Bridge crosses the River Thames like a blue-gray line barely denser than mist. In this very clear version, the sun, smoke and water blend into creamy yellows, pinks and pale greens; only the pillars and a few boats give a measure of space.

Look at the work

The bridge and the city slowly appear amid a mother-of-pearl mist

The bridge deck cuts the canvas a little above the middle. Its piers descend into the water without hard contours, extended by pink, gray and pale yellow reflections. On the left, the darker verticals of the bank dissolve almost immediately into the atmosphere.

The sky occupies a wide, clear band where fumes are indicated by oblique orange-yellow and gray-green gestures. The same network of colors reappears in the Thames, but with more horizontal touches that suggest the current.

Here, London is not described by its monuments: it becomes visible by degrees, as the bridge resists light and fog.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Charing-Cross Bridge in London, Tokyo W1525 - Claude Monet
01

A very lightweight horizontal construction

The bridge must remain readable without becoming a dark bar. Its arches and piers are painted in the same tones as the atmosphere, with only a few colder accents.

02

Fumes integrated into the light

Chimneys and plumes are not black details. Yellows, grays, greens and pinks connect them to the sky and give the industrial city a diffuse presence.

03

Reflections without rigid symmetry

The piles extend into vertical bands, then the horizontal keys of the Thames interrupt them. This alternation creates the depth and movement of the water.
