A monumental farm despite its fragility
The large roof goes very low and forms a dark triangle in the center. The fireplace, door and small windows interrupt this mass, while a second roof appears on the left behind a hedge and a dirt road.
The blue-gray of the walls, the browns of the thatch and the greens of the garden are placed in visible touches. The lighter sky does not make the scene light: it brings out the twisted silhouettes of the trees and the irregular state of the farm.
Farm in Nuenen with peasant and goat F90/JH823 is an oil on canvas of 60 × 85 cm, painted in June - July 1885. It is kept at the Städel Museum under number 1436.

Three observations specific to this painting
The Städel describes an old farmhouse, crooked and dilapidated, which Van Gogh transforms into a monument to the hardworking inhabitants of Brabant. The composition combines the stability of the large roof with an already very active touch.

Its immense slope occupies the heart of the painting and almost seems to weigh on the walls. This mass gives the modest construction a monumental presence.

Figures give scale
The peasant girl wearing red, the light goat and the poultry are small in front of the facade. They place the farm in a concrete daily life.

The touch animates the materials
Palm, walls, foliage and floor receive different brush directions. The surface appears to vibrate without losing the overall construction of the building.
