Claude Monet · La Porte d'Amont observed at low tide · Painting Collection in Normandy
Etretat W22ahand painted reproduction
A dark rock mass emerges above the puddles left by the tide. The Porte d'Amont stands out against a cold sky crossed by pale roses and blues, while a narrow strip of sea closes the horizon to the right. Around 1864, Monet reduced Étretat to a few powerful relationships between cliff, foreshore and light: an austere vision, very far from the picturesque seaside.

Look at the work
The cliff becomes a dark architecture between the sky and the foreshore
The Porte d'Amont occupies the center left and rises to the upper third. Its silhouette is cut into several bumps and a steep point; the arch only appears as a small clear opening in the rock. This disproportion gives the relief an almost monumental presence despite the small format.
In the foreground, the rocks and tidal pools form a series of horizontal planes, brown-green, purple and blue-gray. The sky, lighter, is made up of parallel touches where blues mingle with pale pinks. No character or boat distracts this dialogue between matter and light.
Monet does not tell the story of the life of Étretat: he directly confronts the weight of the cliff with the mobility of the sky, the sea and the reflections.
Composition, touch and light
What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
01
A radical simplification of the site
The Painting in Normandy collection highlights the absence of any daily scene. By eliminating walkers, fishermen and houses, Monet focuses his gaze on the unity of the place and on the geological silhouette of the Porte d'Amont.
02
Chiaroscuro built inside a cold scale
The cliff is not black: greens, browns, purples and blues shape its surface. The brighter sky and reflective puddles bring out these differences without employing harsh contours.
03
One of the first two known views of Étretat
The collection notice places this study around 1864 and recalls that two views of the site are listed for this year. Monet then returned at length to the Normandy cliffs, especially in the 1880s.

Read this specific version
The visual corresponds to Étretat, PN inventory 1999.3.1 of the Painting in Normandy collection, cataloged Wildenstein 22a. The high definition file is a real WebP of 2,362 × 1,532 px.
Composition01
The cliff must retain several dark values
Deep green, brown, purple and blue gray reveal its edges and cavities. A uniform black mass would remove the feeling of wet rock and grazing light.
Color02
The tidal pools take up the sky in fragments
Their mauve blue surfaces are interrupted by dark stones. These discontinuous reflections build the depth of the foreshore and lead towards the sea.
Matter03
The pink of the sky remains diffuse
The pink touches mingle with the blues without forming a spectacular sunset. Their restraint maintains the cold and solitary atmosphere desired by Monet.
Documented benchmarks
Three pieces of information specific to this work
Painted around 1864, this oil on canvas measures 27 × 41 cm. It belongs to the Painting in Normandy collection under the PN 1999.3.1 inventory and bears the Wildenstein number 22a.
Pattern01
The Porte d’Amont in Étretat
The collection notice identifies the harshest rock configuration on the site. The arch and point are seen from the foreshore, at a time when rocks and ponds are being discovered by the tide.
Period02
Monet in Le Havre and on the Normandy coast
After returning from Algeria, the young painter worked in Normandy with few resources. He explores Honfleur, the Côte de Grace, the Saint-Siméon farm and Étretat in the open air, often in the company of Bazille, Boudin or Jongkind.
Collection03
A work deposited with the Franciscans of Deauville
The painting belongs to Painting in Normandy, a set dedicated to the birth of the modern landscape in the region. It is deposited with the City of Deauville in the Franciscans.

What the painter must preserve
Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.
Maintain the compact silhouette of Porte d’Amont.
Vary the dark values of the rock.
Maintain broken reflections in tide pools.
Keep the pink and blue sky cold, without excessive saturation.

This dense navy is suitable for a living room, office or library. A black-brown, bronze or smoked oak frame reinforces the cliff; a pearl gray, mist blue or stone beige wall highlights the sky.
