Fécamp, seaside W652hand painted reproduction

At the foot of the cliffs of Fécamp, the rough sea covers almost the entire foreground. The short, white waves follow one another to the horizon, while the ocher and red wall advances from the left under a luminous gray sky. Signed and dated Claude Monet 81, this oil on canvas measuring 65.3 × 80.5 cm is kept at the MuMa - Musée d'art moderne André Malraux in Le Havre under number 994.01 and corresponds to Wildenstein 652.

Look at the work

The cliff of Fécamp opposite a sea entirely in motion

The coast forms a large vertical to the left then recedes in successive capes towards the center. Facing it, the water occupies the bottom and right of the canvas. A few small boats near the shore give the scale of the cliffs.

The white of the foam is mixed with blue gray, green and purple. In the rock appear reds, pinks and ochres that the overcast weather makes more intense. The sky and the sea share a cold light without merging.

The cliff provides the anchor, but the real subject is the inexhaustible succession of waves: each receives a slightly different direction, value and color.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A hill built by recesses

The successive walls decrease towards the bottom and create a clear depth. The dark cape of the horizon stops the escape without closing the sea.

02

Waves painted like a multitude of gestures

White keys don't follow a single line. They open, break and overlap, giving a continuous swell feeling.

03

Reds in the Normandy cliff

The warm accents of the rock contrast with the blues and grays of the water. They reflect both geology and variations in humid light.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image was cropped as close as possible to the canvas then encoded as a real WebP of 2008 × 1628 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the large mass of cliff on the left

Its visual weight balances the expanse of sea and distinguishes this view of Fécamp from more open compositions.

Color02

Preserve the variety of whites in the foam

The waves should mix warm white, gray and blue rather than becoming identical white lines.

Matter03

Keep small boats near the coast

Their discreet presence measures the height of the wall and links the landscape to the port of Fécamp.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Mona Lisa database documents Fécamp, seaside, oil on canvas from 1881, 65.3 × 80.5 cm, signed and dated Claude Monet 81, inventory 994.01 and Wildenstein catalog 652.

Campaign01

A stay in Fécamp in the spring of 1881

Monet works on the Normandy coast and seeks views at the foot or top of cliffs in order to simultaneously study the rock, the sea and the changing weather.

Signature02

Claude Monet 81 lower left

The visible inscription belongs to this precise version and confirms the year of the Fécamp campaign.

Acquisition03

Entered the Le Havre collections in 1994

The City of Le Havre acquired the work with the help of FRAM Haute-Normandie and the Heritage Fund; it has since carried inventory 994.01.
