Claude Monet · Four life-size figures in the light of a garden · Musée d'Orsay
Women in the garden W67hand painted reproduction
Four women in light dresses are distributed under the trees of a garden. One holds a bouquet, another shelters under an umbrella, while two figures converse at the back. On the monumental scale of the canvas, Monet confronts the white fabrics with real light: cold shadows, yellow flashes and green reflections pass through the dresses as much as the foliage.

Look at the work
White dresses become the testing ground for natural light
The figure on the left advances almost to the lower edge, its light garment cut by the shadow of the tree. On the right, a seated woman holds a beige parasol whose circle echoes the flower bed. The two figures at the bottom are smaller and partially hidden by the branches.
A vertical trunk organizes the center of the canvas and separates the groups without isolating them. The clear path goes backwards, lined with lawn and flowerbeds. Above, the foliage forms a fragmented vault where gaps of sun produce halos on the ground and fabrics.
Monet is not looking for a collective portrait: he measures how the same light simultaneously transforms bodies, dresses, trees and the path.
Composition, touch and light
What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
01
A history painting format applied to the outdoors
With its 255 centimeters high, the canvas gives walkers a scale reserved for large academic compositions. Monet, however, uses this format for a contemporary scene observed in a rented garden in the Paris suburbs.
02
The central trunk as a framework
The tree divides the surface into several zones and stabilizes the diagonals of the dresses and the path. Its branches also make it possible to distribute irregular shadows on the figures, the true heart of the pictorial experience.
03
Patterned whites without uniform gray
Blues, mauves, yellows, greens and pinks appear in fabrics depending on their exposure. The dresses remain bright because their shadows are colorful and because Monet maintains very clear contrasts with the foliage.

The visual shows Women in the Garden, inventory RF 2773 from the Musée d'Orsay and Wildenstein number 67. The reference image of 1,788 × 2,200 px is presented at its native definition in a real WebP file.
Composition01
Each figure has a distinct pose
Camille Doncieux served as a model for the three figures on the left, but Monet varies silhouettes, hats and gestures. These differences must remain readable without transforming faces into detailed portraits.
Color02
Shadows cut through fabrics
The passages from shadow to sun are sometimes clear, especially on the dress in the foreground. Their edge should neither be excessively melted nor highlighted as an outline.
Matter03
The flowers punctuate the bottom of the composition
Small red, pink and white touches run along the path and surround the umbrella. They form accents, not a careful botanical inventory.
Documented benchmarks
Three pieces of information specific to this work
Painted around 1866, this oil on canvas measures 255 × 205 cm. It is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the inventory RF 2773 and listed Wildenstein 67.
Realization01
A large canvas painted in the garden
Monet undertook the work on the motif in the garden of the property he rented in Ville-d'Avray. To work on the entire height of the painting, he had a trench dug and gradually lowered the canvas into the ground.
Model02
Camille Doncieux in several roles
Monet's companion poses for the three women on the left. The faces remain deliberately imprecise: the artist favors attitudes, dresses and their transformations under the light.
Provenance03
From Bazille to purchase by the State
Frédéric Bazille acquired the painting in 1867. It then passed to Bazille's parents, Édouard Manet then returned to Monet; the State bought it directly from the painter in 1921 for the Luxembourg Museum.

What the painter must preserve
Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.
Respect the monumental scale and the position of the four figures.
Preserve colored shadows in white dresses.
Maintain the central trunk as an axis of composition.
Distribute touches of flowers without making them decorative or regular.
This vertical composition becomes a focal point in an entrance, a high-ceilinged living room or a stairwell. A matte gold, dark green or natural wood frame accompanies the garden; an ivory or sage wall reveals the colorful whiteness of the dresses.
