A dark locomotive enters Argenteuil station under a cloud of white steam. Rails, posts and telegraph wires divide the space, while buildings and hills dissolve into blue grays: five years before Saint-Lazare, Monet already made the railway a pattern of light.

Look at the work

The steam transforms the station into a landscape

The locomotive occupies the right edge, very close to the viewer. Its chimney releases a white and gray plume which mixes with the clouds. A few yellow threads highlight the circles and edges of the machine, enough to render its volume without exhaustive mechanical description.

The rails start from the foreground then converge towards a series of black wagons punctuated by red lights. Posts, cables and buildings follow one another under a heavy sky. In the background, a purple hill closes the perspective and absorbs some of the steam.

The train is not placed in front of the landscape: its smoke, its colors and its vanishing lines create the modern landscape.

A locomotive cut off by the frame

The close framing gives it immediate strength. Its black volume balances the light masses of vapor which occupy the upper right part.

Their diagonals start widely from the bottom of the canvas and tighten towards the wagons. They give a rapid depth, adapted to the railway subject.

Reds as signals

A few scarlet dots appear on wagons and near tracks. They guide the eye in a range dominated by grays, blues and blacks.
