The flower basket plays the leading role

The massif forms a large curve which begins in the lower right corner and returns towards the light path. The low flowers make up a tight mosaic. Behind them, the red and white gladioli erect more spaced verticals in front of the dark palisade.

Camille stands on the left, almost confused with the shadow of the garden. Her blue dress and green parasol do not break the plant range. The pale path which runs along the massif discreetly separates its silhouette from the profusion of the foreground.

Monet uses Camille as a measure of space; the light, color and density of the massif remain the real protagonists.

The edge of the massif guides the eye from the low flowers towards the gladioli, then towards Camille. This soft line prevents the colored surface from appearing uniform.

Reds, pinks and greens are often placed side by side. Up close, they remain thick marks; as they move back, they become flowers, leaves and bursts of sunlight.

A figure integrated into the garden

The blue color extends the cold shadows of the fence, while the umbrella takes on the greens. Camille is visible without being isolated by a rigid outline.

The museum adopted the title Rounded Flower Bed (Corb of Flowers) following recent research. Gladioli remain essential, but they belong to a more varied massif which constitutes the complete subject.

Monet paints this scene in the garden of his house in Argenteuil. The flowers allow it to directly juxtapose red, pink, blue and green under bright light.

The Detroit Institute of Arts identifies the woman as Camille Monet. Placed in the background rather than in the center, it transforms the garden view into a lived experience without becoming an independent portrait.
