Grinding wheel, pink and blue prints W1290hand painted reproduction

A huge pink, green and purple millstone enters the canvas from the right, facing a yellow sky which fades into a distant blue. This 72.7 × 92.1 cm oil on canvas, Wildenstein 1290, is also known as Pink and Blue Impressions: Grindstone.

Look at the work

The millstone overflows from the landscape and becomes almost abstract

Monet brings the gerbier closer until he cuts its right side. Its mass occupies more than half of the image, while small houses are reduced to a few shapes at the foot of the distant blue. The diagonal of the field leads the eye towards the base of the millstone then goes up to its dark top.

The face of the gerbier does not remain in shadow: pink, mauve, green and red pass through it like an interior light. Above, pale yellow becomes colder to the left. This organization weakens the traditional perspective and gives priority to the relationships of color and material.

W1290 is one of the most radical millstones: the pattern is no longer only illuminated by the sunset, it seems to have absorbed its colors.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The culmination of the series

W1290 closes the strict suite W1266 to W1290. Monet enlarges the pattern, cuts it by the frame and transforms the familiar gerbier into a monumental presence where shape and color become almost autonomous.

02

A painting documented by Christie's

The sales notice gives the signature Claude Monet 91 at the bottom left, the dimensions of 72.7 × 92.1 cm and the Wildenstein number 1290. The work remains in a private collection.

03

Various historical titles

Catalogs and exhibitions have named it Meule, Grainstack in the Sunlight or Pink and Blue Impressions: Meule. The number W1290 remains the safest reference point for this precise version.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the documented public reproduction of W1290, converted to a true WebP of 3,000 × 2,362 px from the source of 3,200 × 2,519 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A mass cut by the frame

The right edge should not be reconstructed. This voluntary cut gives the gerbier a monumental scale and makes it feel that the pattern continues out of the image.

Color02

Roses mixed with green

The main side superimposes dusty pink, purple, dark green and touches of red. Separating them into clear areas would cause Monet to lose the optical vibration sought.

Matter03

A very horizontal blue distance

The cold band behind the millstone stabilizes the whole and accentuates the heat of the sky. Its small houses must remain secondary, barely readable in the atmosphere.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Christie's documents an oil on canvas from 1891, 72.7 × 92.1 cm, signed lower left and cataloged Wildenstein 1290.

Catalog01

Wildenstein 1290

This issue closes the canonical series of the twenty-five millstones from 1890 -1891 and distinguishes the work of W1273, today at the Museum Barberini.

Dimensions02

72.7 × 92.1 cm

The format is slightly higher than that of several 65 × 92 cm millstones. It reinforces the scale of the gerbier placed in the foreground.

Modern provenance03

Christie's sale, 2016

The work was sold in New York on November 16, 2016. This provenance concerns W1290 and should not be confused with the Sotheby's record of W1273 in 2019.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version W1290, separate from W1273
  • The original format of 72.7 × 92.1 cm
  • The right side deliberately cut by the frame
  • The pinks, purples, greens and reds melted into the material

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its muted roses, deep greens and yellow sky give a warm presence to a living room or bedroom. A gray beige wall, walnut and slate blue textiles balance the power of the pattern.
