From the top of the Pourville cliffs, the gaze plunges between two masses of land towards a turquoise sea covered with sailboats. Signed in 1882, this oil on canvas measuring 63.5 × 80.3 cm is kept at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm under the number NM 2122 and corresponds to Wildenstein 755.

A plunging framing transforms the sea into a vast surface of color

The two rocky overhangs enter from the sides and open a funnel-shaped gap in the center. The horizon, very high, reduces the sky to a narrow band; the sea thus occupies most of the field and seems to rise towards the viewer.

Greens, ochres and purples thicken the nearby cliffs. The water combines turquoise, blue, pink and white in tight touches, while the tiny sails offer clear accents and give the scale of height.

Monet does not look at the coast from the beach: he places the viewer on the edge of the void, so that the marine space reads almost like vertical matter.

A perspective without a central vanishing line

Depth arises from the reduction of sailboats and the gap between nearby cliffs and the horizon. No path leads the eye; the opening itself organizes space.

Deliberately asymmetrical lateral masses

The left cliff is wider and darker, the right cliff steeper. Their difference avoids regular decorative framing and maintains the feeling from a real point of view.

Water constructed by juxtaposed colors

The keys don't imitate every wave. They record changes in light and depth, from bright turquoise to blue and purple areas.

Only one exact image of W755 is used throughout the file. The real WebP measures 3,000 × 2,366 px, reduced from the Nationalmuseum's public file to 3,519 × 2,775 px without enlargement.

Preserve the height of the viewpoint

The horizon must remain close to the upper edge and the boats very small. Enlarging them or lowering the gaze would make the dizziness of the framing disappear.

Color02

Keep the turquoise without uniformity

The water includes pink, blue, green and white variations. A flat turquoise would make the sea decorative and remove its vibration.

Matter03

Keep the cliffs dense and textured

Their thicker touches and earthy colors form the counterweight of the sea. They must remain distinct without black outline.

The museum notice identifies the place represented. Monet worked there in 1882 and explored several elevated viewpoints over the English Channel.

Consortium donation in 1919

The work is donated to the Nationalmuseum by Martin Aronowitsch, John Collijn, GA Kylberger and Axel Melander. It has since been numbered NM 2122.
