Woman at table in backlight, F72Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A peasant woman works sitting in front of a small window with yellow tiles. His body and face almost become a black silhouette; a few objects placed on the table, a basket on the floor and the rectangular light are enough to describe the interior.

Look at the work
The day of the window reveals the room without illuminating the figure
The window occupies the top of the center and cuts out the woman's profile. Its dark uprights divide the light into small irregular squares, like a shiny grid in the middle of the brown range.
The table starts from the left edge with barely lit bowls or containers. The hands meet near the apron, while the basket and the seat posts close the composition at the bottom right.
Woman at the table in backlight F72/JH718 is an oil on canvas of 42.2 × 28.8 cm made in Nuenen in March - April 1885. It is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 111.052.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The difficulty chosen is explicit: painting a figure in front of a window. Van Gogh achieves this effect through an extremely dark scale and some yellow or brown accents which indicate the objects.
01
The window is both a source of light and a geometric center
Its rectangle closes the top of the composition and its crosspieces structure the space. The head is placed in front of this grid, where its dark profile remains perfectly visible.
02
The body is read in fragments rather than a continuous outline
The headdress, shoulder, hands and apron emerge successively from the shadows. The viewer reconstructs the seated posture from these rare, clearer points.
03
Modest objects give a measure to the interior
The table, bowls and basket are not accessories: they locate daily work and organize a diagonal from the left edge to the floor.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
References F72/JH718, dimensions of 42.2 × 28.8 cm and inventory KM 111.052 identify this backlit domestic work scene.
Realism
Van Gogh wants to paint the simplest everyday life
He frequents the houses of weavers and peasants to directly observe their existence. A busy woman near a window responds to his desire for serious realism without anecdote.
Exercise
The figure in front of the window is a deliberately difficult effect
Van Gogh tells Theo that he is working on figures placed against the light. This painting studies precisely how a dark body remains readable before daylight.
Millet
Life and work among peasants follow Millet's example
Jean-François Millet then serves as an artistic and moral guide. Van Gogh regains attention to ordinary gestures, while constructing his own chiaroscuro.
The copy must retain the depth of the colored blacks, the yellow tiles, the profile in front of the window, the table and its objects, the clasped hands and the discreet basket in the foreground.
