Claude Monet · A lilac in full light in the Argenteuil garden · Pushkin Museum
A mass of pink, mauve and white lilac extends above a lawn crossed by shade. Under the branches, a few figures almost absorbed by the foliage benefit from the freshness of the garden. Painted in 1872 -1873, this painting forms a luminous counterpart to Lilac, gray weather preserved at the Musée d'Orsay.

Look at the work
The large shrub occupies almost the entire width and forms an irregular vault. Its light bouquets stand out against deep green foliage, while darker branches fall to the ground. On the right, more yellow vegetation opens up the composition.
The lawn in the foreground combines bluish greens, ochres and touches of purple. Under the lilac, the silhouettes remain discreet so that the shadow appears inhabited without becoming the main subject. A thin strip of clear sky lightens the summit.
The pattern isn't just a lilac: it's the difference between the heat deposited on the flowers and the cool shade that protects the figures.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The bush descends from the left top, digs into the center then rises to the right. This shape naturally creates shelter and leads the eye towards the dark area under the branches.
Warm whites, pinks, mauves and light blues are juxtaposed without botanical outline. The diversity of these accents is enough to suggest hundreds of small corollas.
Monet also paints Lilac, gray weather, today in Orsay. The comparison shows that light and atmosphere, more than the identity of the garden, constitute the real subject.
Reference image
The visual corresponds to Lilac in the Sun, 1872 -1873, inventory α-3311 of the Pushkin Museum and catalog Wildenstein 204. The unique WebP measures 3,000 × 2,310 px, reduced from a public file of 3,164 px without artificial enlargement.
Light clusters do not form a continuous surface: green gaps and dark branches create thickness.
Warm pink in the sun, purple and blue in the folds give the flowers their vibration. A single color would flatten the entire mass.
Their clothes emerge with a few light and dark spots. Specifying them too much would break their integration into the shadow of the garden.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1872 -1873, this oil on canvas measures 50 × 65 cm. It is kept at the Pushkin Museum under inventory 4-3311 and listed as Wildenstein 204.
Lilac in the sun and Lilac, gray weather present a framing close to the same garden. Monet modifies the figures, contrasts and color in order to record two atmospheric states.
The Moscow collector acquired the painting at the end of the 19th century. After the nationalization of its collection, it joined the Pushkin Museum in 1924.
The institutional number unambiguously distinguishes this sunny version from the other gardens and the numerous lilac paintings painted by Monet.
