The scene is built around a silent dialogue between two figures. The Virgin, seated in three-quarter view, wears a dark blue dress and a veil covering her curly hair. Her face leans toward the nude Child, seated on her lap, in an attitude of attentive tenderness.

The Child, turned to the right, raises his eyes to the sky while firmly gripping a wooden cross-shaped object. This almost solemn grasp already foreshadows the Passion. The title of the painting, of the Yarnwinder, also evokes the possible reading of a winder whose shape recalls the instrument of the torture.

In the background, a landscape of steep mountains unfolds its bluish tones through the atmospheric perspective dear to Leonardo. A stream winds through a rocky valley on the left, guiding the eye from the foreground to the horizon. The ground, composed of dark rocks and brown earth, anchors the scene in a rough nature that contrasts with the softness of the flesh.

The light falls from the left, shaping the faces through very soft shadow transitions — the famous Leonardesque sfumato. On the surface, fine cracks run through the paint layer, stigmata of time that add to the depth of the material.

This canvas belongs to the series of Madonnas painted by Leonardo at the very beginning of the 16th century, a period when the Florentine master multiplied variations around the Virgin and Child. The hands and drapery, on the other hand, retain an almost scientific precision — Leonardo having dissected anatomy and long observed the fall of fabrics.
