Ordinary objects become an exercise in color and texture
The hat occupies the foreground and hides part of the containers. Its oval edge, cylindrical cap and black ribbon form the lightest structure of the composition.
Behind him, the materials are constantly changing: shiny glass of the bottle, red terracotta, pale jar surrounded by wicker, crumpled fabric and dark handle placed diagonally.
Still life with straw hat F62/JH922 is an oil on paper mounted on canvas measuring 36.5 × 53.6 cm, painted in The Hague between the end of November and mid-December 1881. The Kroeller-Müller Museum preserves it under number KM 109.323.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The touch is even thinner and more controlled than in later works. The issue is not spectacular expression, but the translation of different surfaces using a charcoal drawing and measured layers of oil.

The hat organizes the ellipses
Edge, cap and black ribbon repeat concentric curves. These shapes respond to the opening of the jar and the lid of the red pot.

Light compares five materials
Straw, glass, fabric, terracotta and wicker do not receive the same highlights. Each object serves as a distinct exercise under a common light source.

The charcoal drawing remains visible
Van Gogh first traces the contours with broad dark lines. Some still pass under thin layers, especially around the hat and containers.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F62/JH922 and KM 109.323 identify this exceptionally early milestone. The dating retained by the Kroeller-Müller Museum placed it in The Hague, during the winter of 1881.

The painter from the Hague School made him work with color and texture from simple objects, arranged in a controlled space.
Technique
The work is painted on prepared paper
The paper has a clear, grained finish, then has been mounted on canvas. The paint remains thin, with more material only in the lights.
Beginning
The museum presents it as his second painting
Van Gogh then wrote to Theo that he considered himself only at the "beginning of the beginning" of serious work with painting and the brush.
The copy must preserve the yellow hat and its black ribbon, the white pipe, the crumpled linen, the bottle, the red pot, the rimmed jar and the black brown background.
