A blue mirror of water where clouds seem to pass under the flowers

Monet divides the canvas into three flexible zones: a very dark reflected edge at the top, a large sky opening in the center and a denser blue foreground. The leaves aligned near the upper edge recede, while the groups spaced further apart at the bottom appear close to the viewer.

The pink and white touches of the flowers are never decorative. They punctuate the path of the gaze and measure the distance. Around them, blue is tinged with mauve, turquoise and green, so that the water seems flat, deep and full of light.

In W1691, depth is born without a visible shore: the reflected sky and the water lilies are enough to build the entire landscape.
