Reproduction details

Claude Monet · 1914 -1917 · Chichu Art Museum · W1812

Water lilies, Chichu W1812hand painted reproduction

Vast blue water occupies the entire square format. A few yellow-green leaves float to the left and bottom, while a purple reflection descends to the center. The dark grasses on the edge appear without forming a continuous edge. This painting from 1914 -1917 is one of five Monets presented in natural light at the Chichu Art Museum.

Look at the work

A few luminous leaves drift in a continuous blue, crossed in the center by a purple reflection and submerged grass

The upper area is the most open. Blue varies from turquoise to cobalt, with gray and purple passages. The leaves are grouped mainly on the left, of different sizes, and a small red flower creates an anchor point.

At the bottom, vertical olive and dark green gestures suggest the plants seen through the water. A large purple shape descends from the top, like the diffuse reflection of a tree or a cloud. Their superposition makes the depth deliberately indecisive.

The canvas is held together by its rarity: few leaves, few flowers, but an immense blue field where each variation changes the perception of water.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A monumental square format

The two meters in height and width prevent a simply decorative reading. The gaze circulates between the rare patterns and the large areas of color.

02

A composition without a bank

Grasses appear at the bottom but do not close the pool. They mix with reflections and let the water occupy the entire field.

03

A presentation thought with architecture

At the Chichu Art Museum, Monet's room uses natural light. The museum, mainly underground, was designed by Tadao Ando to unite works and space.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The Chichu Handbook's unique reference image measures 1,900 × 1,896 px. It has been converted into a true WebP at its native resolution, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Leaves concentrated on the left

The main group must maintain its position and its gaps. Dispersing the leaves further would modify the large asymmetrical balance of the canvas.

Color02

A blue composed of several depths

Turquoise, cobalt, gray, green and purple overlap. Reproduction should avoid a uniform blue, especially in the large upper area.

Matter03

Vertical gestures below the surface

The bottom grasses and central reflection cross the water in long marks. Their relative transparency distinguishes the depth of the simple floating pattern.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Tadao Ando building is mainly underground, but the Monet Room receives natural light which changes the perception of colors during the day.
