Olives on a Hill, F716Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Rows of olive trees rise on red-brown earth, while two trees cut by the lower edge spring yellow and green; Van Gogh transforms the slope into a succession of rhythmic curves.

Look at the work

The olive grove spread out on the slope

The small trees are arranged in horizontal bands that follow the relief. Their green and turquoise crowns appear as separate islets on the red ground.

In the foreground, two larger olive trees are truncated by the frame. Their ocher yellow foliage stands out on a brown curve, giving immediate depth to the small format.

Painted in Saint-Rémy in October 1889, F716 belongs to Van Gogh's extensive research into Provençal olive groves. The artist wanted to capture their moving shape and changing color from direct observation.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum gives for s0148V1962 the references F716/JH1878 and the dimensions of 33 × 40.5 cm.

01

A slope organized in strips

The curves of the terrain pile up from bottom to top. This structure transforms the hill into an almost abstract pattern while retaining its relief.

02

Individualized trees

Each olive tree has a sinuous trunk and a crown made of curls. Variations of green prevent mechanical repetition.

03

Red versus green

The rusty earth brings out the turquoise and olive foliage; warm yellow accents connect the foreground to the background.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Van Gogh returned several times to the olive trees of Saint-Rémy and gave them a major place in his work in 1889.

Series

Among the olive groves of 1889

The artist paints at least fifteen paintings dedicated to olive trees, with different formats, seasons and lighting.

Method

Work from nature

Van Gogh defends the observation of the motif against the religious compositions imagined by Gauguin and Bernard around the Garden of Olives.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the superposition of the rows, the diversity of the crowns and the contrast between red earth, turquoise greens and ocher yellows.

  • The two yellow olive trees in the foreground
  • The rows of trees on the slope
  • The red-brown earth
  • The sinuous black trunks
  • The dark band that closes the top
