🖼️ Portrait of Louis XIV in coronation costume – Hyacinthe Rigaud (1701)
Hand-painted reproduction – By Alpha Reproduction
The immortal image of absolute power: Louis XIV at his peak
Created in 1701 by Hyacinthe Rigaud, this portrait in coronation costume of Louis XIV is undoubtedly one of the most famous paintings in the history of French art. Painted at the request of the king's grandson, Philippe V of Spain, this masterpiece aims to glorify the monarch in all his majesty, at the height of his reign.
Rigaud does not merely depict a man here: he paints absolute monarchy incarnate, in an image that has become a symbol of the greatness of France under the Ancien Régime.
A formal portrait model, codified and theatrical
A royally orchestrated composition
Louis XIV is depicted full-length, standing, in an imposing yet elegant pose, wearing the royal blue coronation mantle strewn with fleurs-de-lis and lined with ermine. He holds in his right hand the sceptre, while the crown, the hand of justice, and Charlemagne's sword rest beside him on a ceremonial cushion.
The king is wearing red high-heeled shoes, a symbol of aristocratic privilege, and sports white silk stockings, highlighting his legs, which he considered one of his physical assets. Behind him, Corinthian columns, a carved throne, and purple curtains create a grand, classical, and codified setting.
An aging king, but still triumphant
At the time of the painting, Louis XIV is 63 years old, but Rigaud chooses not to hide the signs of aging. On the contrary, he incorporates them into the grandeur of the portrait: the face is dignified, the wig imposing, the posture stable, conveying an unalterable power despite the years.
The entire painting is a staging of power, stability, and divine sovereignty, as required by the etiquette of Versailles.
