Claude Monet · Camille reading in the herbs of Argenteuil · Private collection

In the prairie W405hand painted reproduction

Camille Monet is almost absorbed by a tall meadow, strewn with yellow, white, purple and pink flowers. Sitting under a green parasol, she reads a book that her hand holds at the edge of the foliage. Monet removes all urban landmarks: the figure, the grass and the light make up a pastoral refuge in the heart of his Argenteuil period.

Look at the work

The reader almost disappears into a moving meadow

Camille's bust is placed slightly to the right of center. Her flowery hat and light face emerge from a blue-gray dress, while the large dark green parasol closes the space behind her. The open book advances to the left in the grass.

The meadow occupies the entire frame, without a clearly marked path or horizon. Long green touches describe the stems; small yellows, whites and purples punctuate them. The upper band becomes lighter and lets the sky breathe above the embankment.

Camille is not posed in front of nature: her dress, her parasol and her book are inserted in the same fabric of touches as the flowers.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A partially hidden figure

The grass passes in front of the arm, the coat and the book. These coverings give the sensation of truly tall vegetation.

02

The umbrella as a dark halo

Its rounded shape frames the head and brings out the light hat. The greens must remain distinct from those of the embankment.

03

A surface animated in several directions

The stems rise vertically, the oblique leaves cross, and the book creates a clear diagonal. Their variety maintains movement throughout the canvas.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference is Dans la prairie, Wildenstein 405, documented by Christie's. The file of 2583 × 1890 px was preserved without enlargement and converted to WebP for zoom.

Composition01

The face remains small but precise

A few pinks and grays are enough to detach it from the hat. It must not receive a level of detail foreign to the rest of the canvas.

Color02

The flowers are distributed without repetitive pattern

The yellows dominate near Camille, while the mauves and whites appear in irregular groups.

Matter03

The book can be read for its clear value

Its inclined shape crosses the greens of the foreground. The pages remain simple, without text or strong black outline.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Signed and dated 1876, this 60.3 × 82 cm oil on canvas is classified Wildenstein 405 and belongs to a private collection.

Argenteuil01

A pastoral break near Paris

Monet lived in Argenteuil from the end of 1871 until 1878. In 1876, he moved bridges, trains and factories here to concentrate the stage on Camille and the meadow.

Exposure02

Shown at the Third Impressionist Exhibition

The painting appeared in 1877 at number 94 of the third painting exhibition. This is the first edition where the group officially assumes the term impressionist.

Provenance03

Théodore Duret, first known owner

The critic and collector Théodore Duret lent the work to the 1877 exhibition. Early defender of the movement, he published one of the first syntheses devoted to impressionist painters.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Integrate the figure into the herbs in the foreground.
  • Holding the dark umbrella behind the hat.
  • Vary the yellow, white and purple flowers.
  • Preserve the clear book diagonally across the arm.
