The W1273 Grindershand painted reproduction

A row of gerbiers sinks diagonally towards a low sun, behind a monumental mass which fills the entire left edge. This oil on canvas of 73 × 92.5 cm, painted in 1890 and signed Claude Monet 91, belongs to the Hasso Plattner Collection of the Museum Barberini under the inventory MB-Mon-26 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1273.

Look at the work

A diagonal of gerbiers crosses the backlight and energizes the entire series

The first gerbier is so close that it is largely cut to the left. Behind it, two decreasing shapes lead towards the luminous center; the trees on the right close the perspective without blocking the sky.

The sun appears as an orange-yellow focus between the masses. Its rays cross the diagonal of the gerbiers, while purples, reds, greens and blues saturate the shadows and the field.

W1273 gives the serial pattern an unusual energy: the depth advances diagonally and the backlight bursts the color on each edge.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A strong spatial diagonal

The Museum Barberini highlights the oblique succession of gerbiers. Their rapid decrease leads to the foreground looking towards the sun.

02

An intensely colorful backlight

Light does not whiten shapes. It produces yellow and red borders, facing mauve and blue shadows of great density.

03

The influence of Japanese prints

The museum brings together the truncated framing, diagonal and intense colors of Japanese engraved woods collected by Monet.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one reference image is used. The exact image of W1273 is converted to a true WebP of 2200 × 1690 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A mass deliberately cut to the left

The first gerbier overflows the frame. Reducing it would weaken the proximity effect and all the dynamics of the row.

Color02

A sun integrated into matter

The luminous disk remains partially absorbed by the touches of the sky and the gerbiers; it must not become an isolated white circle.

Matter03

Oriented impasto

The gestures follow the slopes of the straw then radiate around the light, making visible the construction of the solar effect.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museum Barberini documents Les Meules, oil on canvas from 1890, 73 × 92.5 cm, inventory MB-Mon-26 and Wildenstein 1273.

Provenance01

Purchased in Monet by Durand-Ruel

Durand-Ruel acquired the painting from the artist on July 2, 1891. She then joined the collection of Chicago patron Bertha Palmer.

Series02

Twenty-five versions in 1890 -1891

Monet studies gerbiers at different times and in several climates, making temporal change the central subject of the cycle.

Collection03

Hasso Plattner Collection

The painting now bears the MB-Mon-26 inventory at the Museum Barberini. Its reference Wildenstein 1273 precisely fixes this version.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The MB-Mon-26 version, Wildenstein 1273
  • The first monumental gerbier cut on the left
  • The diagonal row towards the sun
  • The intense colors of the backlight

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This very colorful canvas is suitable for a living room or library. A stone wall, walnut and eggplant, deep green or ocher textiles take on its contrasts without competing with the sun.
