The Boat W1154hand painted reproduction

A light boat appears in the upper right corner, almost pushed out of the frame by a vast network of submerged grass. Dark water is never painted as an empty surface: it fills with greens, blues, yellows and reds that reveal vegetation beneath the current. Made in 1887, this unsigned oil on canvas measuring 146 × 133 cm is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under number 5082 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1154.

A boat relegated to the edge of an underwater world

The boat is cut by the upper edge and shows only part of its whitish hull, marked with greens and browns. This off-center position reverses the expected hierarchy: the object which gives its title to the work becomes a secondary landmark, while the water occupies almost all the space.

Long aquatic plants cross the composition diagonally and ripple beneath the surface. Some touches of yellow and light green appear close to light; others, blue black and red brown, suggest greater depth. Monet superimposes reflection, transparency and material without drawing any separation between them.

The boat indicates where the surface is; everything else forces the eye to descend into the water, among the grass whose movement transforms the bottom of the river into an autonomous landscape.

A radically off-center framing

By placing the boat at the top right, Monet avoids a narrative scene of a walk. The viewer mainly looks at what the boat overlooks: a moving plant depth.

Organic diagonals

Long grass replaces perspective lines. They start from the edges, cross and change direction, giving the composition continuous circulation despite the absence of horizon.

Transparency obtained by superposition

Light colors refer to reflections and plants close to the surface; black greens and deep blues open hollows. The canvas thus makes several water levels visible simultaneously.

These warm notes are not decorative: they differentiate between grasses, reflections and depths. A uniform green cast would make the surface flat.

Keep the keys long and flexible

Plants must follow curved and irregular movements. Too sharp or parallel lines would cause the impression of current and the density of aquatic vegetation to be lost.

Monet represents his daughters-in-law in several paintings related to the river. In W1154, no figure is visible: the boat remains at the edge of the frame and leaves plenty of room for aquatic grasses.

Legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

The painting joins the Marmottan Monet museum with the legacy of the artist's son. It bears the inventory number 5082 and belongs to the heart of the museum's Monet collection.
