An orange-red trunk rises on the left before dividing into heavy, almost black branches. Their curves enclose a curtain of green, yellow and blue leaves, while a narrow opening of water appears at the bottom. This vertical vision from 1918 transforms the Giverny willow into living, dense architecture crossed by warm shards.

Look at the work

The branches form a dark vault in front of a vertical curtain of light

The structure of the tree is read in stages. The trunk rises near the left edge in reds, pinks and yellows, then a main branch curves above the center. On the right, a second black mass unfolds in the opposite direction. These two arches do not completely close the space: they frame a lighter area where the branches descend like threads.

The leaves are suggested by long, pendulous touches, from turquoise green to acidic yellow. Some follow the fall of the foliage, others fold into small loops. At the bottom, burgundy, orange and olive green bands indicate the water of the pool. The perspective arises from this passage between the nearby branches, very thick, and the finer verticals of the bottom.

The willow is not described branch by branch: its weight, its fall and its movement are reconstructed by the directions of the pictorial material.

An incandescent trunk in the darkness

The reds and oranges on the left side should remain encased in very dark purples and greens. Their intensity gives the trunk its presence without transforming it into an isolated shape.

Arched branches that structure the entire canvas

The large brown and black arches lead the gaze above the center then to the right. Their continuity is essential, even when touches of foliage interrupt them.

A curtain made up of very different greens

Olive yellow, turquoise, emerald green and blue gray alternate in the fallout. Keeping them separate prevents a reproduction of this work from becoming a uniform green mass.

A series of willows painted during the war

Monet worked intensely on the willow motif in 1918 -1919. These trees in the water garden allowed him to associate a monumental form with an increasingly free painting, often close to the climate of mourning of the First World War.

Collection03

Gift of Howard and Babette Sirak

The painting was donated to the Columbus Museum of Art by Howard and Babette Sirak. It thus belongs to one of the important American ensembles allowing us to follow Monet's passage towards his great late compositions.
